This renovation design project was all about regenerating space and landscape of a traditional Japanese garden on the north of The Tokyo National Museum main building. The garden had been underused for long period of time mainly due to somewhat dark and depressed atmosphere under the overgrown trees. The project aims at promoting potential values of existing garden resource such as matured trees and several teahouses, and recreating the space in which visitors will feel sense of tradition and authenticity by concentrating design effort mostly on the following three areas and elements. Firstly, light and airy environment was restored by thinning and pruning the overgrown existing tree groups and much more suitable condition was provided for sound growth of forest floor vegetation. Secondly, network of garden paths was reorganized by preparing barrier-free circulation, additional path routes and access to the teahouses. Thirdly, a series of rest spaces for visitors to sit and enjoy views toward the garden by setting seating on the main terrace and around Shunsoro teahouse. On the completion, fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and seasonal flowers add colorful atmosphere along the easy-to-walk and ever-changing sequence of garden paths and create a gorgeous yet calming experience through the garden space that will be ultimate expression of hospitality.
